Pyramids are monumental structures built of stone. Usually they have a rectangular base and four triangular faces that converge to a vertex. Some pyramids are so large, with buildings so well made, that some people say they were not built by man. Because at the time, technological resources could not make such large pyramids.
The Egyptian pyramids are best known as, for example, the Great Pyramid of Giza. But our world in both ancient times and the most recent several strange pyramids were made. They may not be well known and so we show some of them here.
1 – Pyramid of Cestius
When you think of monuments in Rome, the Colosseum comes to mind. But in the Italian capital you can also see an ancient pyramid that is dated from the Roman Empire. The construction of this pyramid is believed to have taken place between 18-12 BC
The Pyramid of Cestius houses the tomb of Caius Castius, who was a Roman magistrate. It stands out as a huge pyramid made of bricks and cement with a white marble covering. One thing to note is that this pyramid is more slanted than the Egyptians. According to legends, the Pyramid of Cestius was identified as the tomb of Remus. And another, which was demolished, was considered the tomb of Remulus.
2 – Monte Alban
Mexico is home to several notable pyramids. And Monte Alban is a must for those who are pyramid enthusiasts . The place has a combination of green lawned courtyards and incredible pyramids that have been meticulously staggered and built of stones.
The buildings on the site are of Zapotec culture and date from the eighth century BC. The place had 1500 years of human history and cultural changes were inevitable. After several centuries of being used by the Zapotecs, mixtec culture assumed use before the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Currently the place is in the Mexican province of Oaxaca, which is relatively close to the Guatemalan border.
3 – Tchogha Zanbil Pyramid
The ancient civilization of Iran is full of intrigue. And one of those things is a gigantic pyramid that is damaged but still present and identified as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site. This structure, which is in Khuzestan province, is the main feature of a huge complex with a perimeter of just under four kilometers which is known as Tchogha Zanbil.
This huge city was built by King Untash-Napirisha of the Elamites in the historic Kingdom of Elam. The pyramid that is in the center of Tchogha Zanbil is the largest and most monumental stepped pyramid that was not built in Mesopotamia. This pyramid is a known type of ziggurat, which is a stepped pyramid-shaped structure that has enormous heights. The Tchogha Zanbil Pyramid is a religious monument that houses the Elamite deities Inshushinak and Napirisha.
4 – Cahokia
In the United States it is also possible to see pyramids left behind. Mississippi culture has left behind a historic place with giant mounds of earth resembling pyramids. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the relics of Mississippian culture that has a wide variety of uses.
Cahokia is a place of conservation efforts and has been designated as a historic place by the state of Illinois. And to protect these riches, 2,200 acres were purchased by Illinois and restoration efforts were made to establish the historic site. The name of the site is named after the Cahokia people who remained there in the 17th century.
5 – Koh Ker Pyramid
This pyramid is hidden in the Cambodian jungles. This terraced pyramid maintains its structure with each piece holding the building assembly. Exploration of the pyramid is problematic because of the presence of landmines in the area.
There is also the fact that the entrance of the place is also a matter of speculation. And it is thought that there may be a clandestine underground tunnel in the structure. The pyramid is made of sandstone, has seven hierarchical levels and a height of approximately 40 meters.
6 – The Pyramids of Sudan
The country with the most pyramids is Sudan. The northern part of the country has a rich history for its Kushite kingdoms. Five archaeological sites have 350 pyramids that were built over several hundred years as tombs where kings and queens were buried.
These pyramids are between six and 30 meters high and have foundations that are about one fifth of the typical area of the Egyptian pyramid base. This makes them look more abrupt and pointy in appearance. The slope of the pyramids measure 70 degrees compared to the typical Egyptian slope. The Pyramids of Sudan are recognized by the UN as a World Heritage Site.
7 – Pyramid of the Moon
It is in San Juan Teotihuacán, Mexico, and is the second largest pyramid in the city. It was built to look like the Cerro Gordo mountain which is near the building area. It is dated from 100 to 450 AD. It is located at the end of Avenue of the Dead and the staircase of the place was where animals and humans were sacrificed in religious ceremonies.
